Friday Finals: Ironmen post big win over North Stars

December 31, 2011

Traverse City 1 @ Jamestown 5 - The Jamestown Ironmen came back from the Christmas break looking like a new team. After a bit of a slow start they dominated the rest of the game on their way to an impressive 5-1 victory over the Traverse City North Stars.  The North Stars came out of the gates fast and outshot Jamestown 10-2 in the first 10 minutes of action. Jamestown withstood the early pressure and used their speed to take over the second half of the period.  The Ironmen were rewarded late in the period when Eric Fragoso scored his first of the game after a nifty move by Anthony Coles left him all alone just outside the North Stars crease.  The Ironmen started the second period much like they ended the first period, using their speed to keep the North Stars on their heels. Nick Bingaman took advantage of a North Stars turnover and blasted a slap shot by North Stars goalie Kyle Laslo to give Jamestown a 2-0 lead just a minute and a half into the period.  Jamestown continued to mount pressure on the North Stars defense and Jeff McFarland ripped a shot from inside the faceoff circle to give Jamestown a 3-0 lead.  Jamestown took a penalty midway through the period that gave the North Stars back some momentum. They managed five shots on goal with the man advantage but Ironmen goalie Joey Ballmer turned them all away to keep his team ahead 3-0 heading into the final period.  Jamestown made sure the game would be out of reach as they dominated the early part of the third period and used goals by Cody Sarmiento and Eric Fragoso to put the game out of reach.  The North Stars broke the shutout with a late power play goal by Chris Waterstreet. Ballmer made two or three saves but was unable to cover the rebound and Waterstreet buried the rebound from inside the crease. Boxscore
