NAHL announces Combat Hockey Three Stars of the Week

September 13, 2011

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) today announced the Three Stars of the Week presented by Combat Hockey for the week ending September 11, 2011.  The Three Stars of the Week is a weekly feature during the 2011-12 regular season that honors the top performing players each week of the regular season as nominated by their respective teams.

1st Star: JT Osborn, forward, Fairbanks Ice Dogs
Osborn, 20, picked up right where he left off last season as the forward from Alpine, California, had five points in two games at Kenai River.  In Friday’s 5-4 OT loss, Osborn had a goal and two assists as the Ice Dogs erased a three-goal deficit to briefly take a 4-3 lead before falling in a shootout, but still earning a point.  On Saturday, Osborn assisted on the first two Ice Dogs goals, as again, they had to come from behind to win, 3-2 to give Fairbanks three of a possible four points during the weekend.  Osborn leads the NAHL in points after the opening weekend with five.  A season ago, Osborn was second in the NAHL in goals with 37, while leading his Ice Dogs to the Robertson Cup National Championship.

2nd Star: Wes Elrod, defenseman, Jamestown Ironmen
Elrod, 20, scored a goal in both games and added an assist, as the Ironmen made their triumphant debut with a weekend road sweep of the Chicago Hitmen.  On Friday, Elrod connected on Jamestown’s fourth goal as the Ironmen won 4-1 over the Hitmen.  On Saturday, the Nashville, Tennessee native connected for the game-winning goal on the power play and added an assist as Jamestown scored five goals in the 3rd period in a come-from-behind 7-5 win over Chicago.  Last season, while playing for the Motor City Metal Jackets, Elrod had five assists in 44 games played.  His goal on Friday was the first of his NAHL career.

3rd Star: Joe Kalisz, forward, St. Louis Bandits
In his lone game of the weekend, Kalisz, 20, had three assists in St. Louis’ opening night 6-2 win over the Springfield Jr. Blues.  Kalisz, who hails from Davison, Michigan, assisted on three straight Bandits goals in the 1st and 2nd periods, including the game-winner late in the 2nd period.  Kalisz was named 2nd star of the game and also had three shots on goal.  Kalisz is entering his third season in the NAHL.  Last season, he only appeared in 28 regular season games due to injury, but he managed to rack up 30 points during those games.   In the playoffs, Kalisz had seven points in 10 games played.

All NAHL teams converge this week on Blaine, Minnesota for the Combat Hockey/NAHL Showcase Tournament, which begins Wednesday, September 14th and features all 28 NAHL teams playing in four regular season games throughout the week.  For more details on the NAHL Showcase Tournament, including ticket, hotel, rental car, broadcast, scouting and schedule information, visit NAHLShowcase.com.
