NAHL announces monthly awards for November

December 5, 2017

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) has announced its monthly player awards for the month of November.  The Bauer Hockey NAHL Forward of the Month is Larry Jungwirth from the Corpus Christi IceRays.  The Bauer Hockey NAHL Defenseman of the Month is Dominick Procopio from the Shreveport Mudbugs.  The Vaughn NAHL Goaltender of the Month is Alex Schilling from the Austin Bruins. Only players who are nominated by their respective teams are considered for the NAHL monthly awards.

Bauer Hockey NAHL Forward of the Month: Larry Jungwirth, Corpus Christi IceRays

Corpus Christi IceRays forward Larry Jungwirth, 20, led all NAHL players during the month of November with 14 points in 8 games played. That included a league-high 12 goals in addition to two assists. The 5’11/170 lbs. native of Bloomington, Minnesota, registered at least a point in seven of his eight games during the month and also recorded four multi-point games. His best outing came in a 5-2 win over Topeka on November 10th where he had a hat-trick and an assist. For the season, Jungwirth leads the IceRays in scoring with 23 points in 24 games played. His 16 goals is currently tied for 2nd in the NAHL. “Larry had a terrific month statistically for us. He came back to Corpus Christi with two goals in mind. The first was to win a Robertson Cup and the second was to secure an NCAA Division I commitment. By producing the way that he has in November he is helping our team succeed and also helping his individual stock continue to rise. We are very happy for Larry to be recognized for his hard work,” said IceRays head coach Brad Flynn.

“First and foremost, I have to thank my teammates and coaches.  Our success here is a team effort and none of the individual success would be possible without all of them. I think we started to gel in November and become a family. I think playing some home games helped, but we are getting closer every single day. Everyone is buying into a team system and we are trying to have success as a single unit,” said Jungwirth. “The NAHL is full of a lot of skilled, hard-working, and talented players. You have to come ready to play every day. I would love to play in the NHL one day, but the next step is to keep working hard to try and earn an NCAA Division I commitment.”

Procopio (6’2/190) recorded 10 points (2 goals, 8 assists) in those seven games and was also a +6. He managed to also record at least one point in all seven games. For the season, Procopio is 2nd in team scoring with 18 points in 25 games played and he is currently riding a nine-game point streak. “Dominic has been a true leader for us since day one. First and foremost, he competes, and is also respected by every player in the dressing room. He plays from the heart and exemplifies what it means to be a Mudbug,” said Mudbugs head coach Karlis Zirnis.

The veteran blueliner said the secret to the success was building off of momentum from last season. “We have some great guys here this year and guys that are hungry for more success after last year’s experience. We are a very deep team and I think I am reaping the benefits from being around some great teammates,” said Procopio. “I am working very hard and trying to improve each day. Our team has a great track record of some NCAA Division I commitments and I am hopeful that I can be the next one of those because that has been a dream and goal of mine since Day 1 of playing in the NAHL.”

Vaughn NAHL Goaltender of the Month: Alex Schilling, Austin Bruins

A big part of the ongoing success of the Central Division-leading Austin Bruins has been veteran goaltender Alex Schilling. The 19-year-old netminder from Medina, Minnesota, was outstanding in the month of November as he put up a 4-0-1 record with a 1.18 goals against average and a 95.8% save percentage. Overall during the month, Schilling (6’1/185) stopped 136 of 142 shots that came his way, allowing just six goals. That included his first shutout of the season, which was a 1-0 win at Coulee Region on November 25th. For the season, Schilling has a 7-4-2 record with a 1.99 GAA and a 92.7% save percentage. “Alex has been solid for us and was a key part in our success as of late. He stays very composed in the net and has made some big saves for us. His leadership on and off the ice has been infectious throughout our team and we are really going to rely on him continuing to get the job done, going forward,” said Bruins head coach Steve Howard.

“I think it all started with the sweep of our series in Bismarck the first weekend in November. We had a strong weekend and contributions came from everywhere. We are doing the right things and the little things it takes to win. Every weekend it seems like someone new is contributing, so to have that kind of support and depth really helps,” said Schilling. “Every point matters in the Central Division, so my focus is to keep my team in games and get better every day. I think we have a group of guys that can make a deep run in the Robertson Cup playoffs and hopefully that also translates into an NCAA Division I opportunity.”
