Wilderness defenseman Roehl makes NCAA DI commitment

July 25, 2017
The Minnesota Wilderness, proud members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), are proud to announce that defenseman Louie Roehl has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the NCHC.

Roehl, 19, who garnered league honors as one of the top rookie defenseman in the North American Hockey League, had 34 points (4 goals, 30 assists) in 57 NAHL regular season games.

Roehl (5’10/170) was named to the All-NAHL Rookie 2nd Team and also named to the NAHL All-Central Division Rookie Team. In addition, he was selected to and played in the 2017 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament for the NAHL Selects team, where he posted one assist in two games.

Head Coach Tim Madsen had this to say about Roehl’s commitment, “It was an absolute pleasure coaching Louie Roehl. He was a great teammate, he was coachable, and he cared about his teams’ success before his own. Our entire organization is very proud of Louie and we wish him nothing but continued success at the NCAA level.”

Roehl, with his 41 points (regular season and playoffs) as a first year defenseman for the Wilderness, now owns the franchise record for points by a first year defenseman. An Eden Prairie, Minnesota native, he played in two Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournaments before choosing the Wilderness organization to further his development at the junior level.

Roehl had this to say about his commitment to UMD, “Thank you to Coach Madsen, Coach Benedict, the Lilly’s my teammates and the entire Wilderness family. I grew as both a person and player while a part of the Wilderness organization. It was an incredible experience. I am honored and excited to be returning to the area this Fall to play for the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. This has been my dream ever since I started playing hockey. Thank you again to the Wilderness for your support and helping me achieve my goals. I couldn’t have done it with all of you.”

With Roehl’s commitment to UMD, he becomes the 10th player from the 2016-17 roster to commit to a NCAA Division I Program.
