Team Weight, Team Rafalski skate to Top Prospects wins

Quinnipiac recruit Jack Callahan rang up a pair of goals in Team Weight's 5-1 win over Team Miller on Day 1 of the NAHL Top Prospects Tournament.

Team Weight (1-0) and Team Rafalski (1-0) skated to wins on the first day of the NAHL Top Prospects Tournament on Sunday at the Iorio Ice Arena in Walpole, Mass.

Forward Rock Einersen (Texas Tornado) connected for a pair of goals and forward Brandon Brossoit (Alaska Avalanche) scored the game-winner in Team Rafalski’s 3-1 triumph over Team Legwand (0-1).

Forward Ben Carey (Wenatchee Wild/Air Force Academy) struck for Team Legwand’s lone tally.

Between the pipes, Jimmy Kruger (Texas Tornado) stopped all 21 shots he faced, while Rasmus Tirronen (Topeka RoadRunners/Merrimack College) made 19 saves. For Team Legwand, Nikifor Szczerba (Amarillo Bulls) turned back 17 of 18 shots, while Edward Dyson (Dawson Creek Rage) made 18 saves.

In Team Weight’s 5-1 win over Team Miller (0-1), defenseman Jack Callahan (Springfield Jr. Blues/Quinnipiac University) notched two goals and forward Cory Ward (Aberdeen Wings) connected for the game-winner.

Forwards Chris Bournazos (Owatonna Express) and Matt Blomquist (Coulee Region Chill) added the other Team Weight goals, while forward Ross Mauermann (Janesville Jets) potted Team Miller’s only marker.

In goal, Team Weight’s Ryan Faragher (Bismarck Bobcats) stopped 17 of 18 shots, while Paul Moberg (Coulee Region) turned aside all 13 shots he faced. Team Miller’s David Jacobson (Janesville) made 32 saves.

On the second day of the tournament, Team Miller will face off against Team Legwand (3 p.m. local time) and Team Rafalski will play Team Weight (6 p.m.).

At the Top Prospects Tournament, which runs from Dec. 5-7 and crowns a tournament champion, four teams comprised of the NAHL’s top committed and un-committed college players, including those recognized on the NHL Central Scouting Bureau’s “Players to Watch” list for 2011 draft-eligibles, are playing a three-game round robin.
