Johnstown forward Doyon makes NCAA commitment

June 1, 2016

Drew Doyon played three years in the NAPHL prior to playing three years in the NAHL.

The Johnstown Tomahawks, proud members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), are pleased to announce the commitment of former Tomahawks assistant captain Drew Doyon to NCAA Division III Aurora University.

The Tomahawks acquired the Carmel, Indiana, native in May 2015 from the Aberdeen Wings and the gritty forward contributed 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) and 181 penalty minutes in 49 games in 2015-16.

Doyon, 20, becomes the second Tomahawk player to commit to Aurora, as Logan Hudson announced his intentions to play for the Spartans in early May.

The Spartans compete in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

Doyon played three full seasons in the NAHL from 2013-14 to 2015-16, totalling 156 career games and 47 career points.  Prior to playing in the NAHL, Doyon spent three seasons playing in the NAPHL for the Indiana Jr. Ice.  In 54 career NAPHL games, Doyon had 83 points.

“Acquiring Drew prior to this past season turned out to be an integral part of our team's success,” Tomahawks head coach Mike Letizia said. “He was an ultimate leader and great presence for our club.”

Doyon was the recipient of the NAHL East Division Leadership award and his contributions, according to Letizia, had a positive effect on the team.

“His contributions to the team may not always have appeared in the box score or showed up on paper but it was no question appreciated by his teammates and coaches,” Letizia said. “I know that he has a bright future ahead of him on and off the ice and I look forward to following it proudly.”
