Magicians, Wildcats win on Wednesday

March 2, 2016
MN Magicians 3 @ Austin 1 – The Minnesota Magicians moved into a tie for the 4th and final playoff spot in the Central Division thanks to a 3-1 win on the road in Austin on Wednesday night against the Bruins. Will Ulrich made 34 saves and Brady Heppner scored twice to lead the Magicians to the win. The Bruins started the scoring late in the 1st period as Zach Kennedy lit the lamp for his 7th goal of the season.  Less than two minutes later, the Magicians struck back with a goal from Andrew Zerban. Heppner gave the Magicians a 2-1 lead early in the 2nd period and then added an empty-net goal in the final seconds of the 3rd period to secure the win, as Ulrich did the rest in goal for Minnesota. Austin goalie Kris Carlson played well in the loss making 31 saves. Boxscore

Amarillo 0 @ Wichita Falls 2 - The Wichita Falls Wildcats prolonged their home winning streak to double digits and their winning streak over the Amarillo Bulls to nine games with a 2-0 victory on Saturday night. It only took :26 seconds for the Wildcats to get the ball rolling. After cycling the puck well in the Bulls’ zone right off the bat, Jeff Baum took a snap shot from the blue line, which Austin Beaulieu tipped over the blocker of Anton Martinsson and into the top shelf of the net.  The second period was a battle of goalies. Justin Kapelmaster shut down all six attempts thrown his way, including a breakaway by Liam Ferguson, while Martinsson killed off four Wildcats’ power plays and sixteen shots in the middle period. After making 40 straight saves, the Wildcats finally scored an insurance goal on Martinsson. Austin Albrecht buried a second chance past him after he made a phenomenal initial right pad save. Albrecht ended a 15-game goalless drought with the tally. Kapelmaster made 19 stops for his fourth shutout and 27th win of the season, while Martinsson denied 41 of the 43 bids he faced. Boxscore
