Saturday Scores: Magicians first sweep a big one

Minot 3 @ MN Magicians 4 – Thanks to more big nights from Brady Heppner and Casey Jerry, the Minnesota Magicians completed a weekend home sweep of the Mint Minotauros with a 4-3 win on Saturday. After a scoreless 1st period, the Magicians opened up a 3-0 lead in the 2nd period with goals from Tyler Bump, Heppner and Jerry. Minot came back with two goals to cut the lead to 3-2 with tallies from Zack Bross and Nate Pionk. The Magicians went back up by two with a goal from Jack Christensen. Austin Martinsen had the other Minot goal. Magicians goalie Will Ulrich was busy in the win, making 39 saves. Boxscore

Wichita Falls 5 @ Lone Star 1 – The league’s top goalie statistically Justin Kapelmaster was at it again as the netminder made 30 saves to help the Wildcats run their winning streak to nine straight games with a 5-1 win at Lone Star, completing a weekend road sweep. After a scoreless 1st period, the Wildcats went up 2-0 early in the 3rd period with goals from Ryan Burnett and Austin Beaulieu. Lone Star responded with shorthanded goal from Alex Berardinelli, but it was all Wildcats after that as they scored three more goals from Nikita Litviak, Austin Albrecht and Andre Pison. Boxscore

Bismarck 5 @ Brookings 1 – Hunter Shepard made 23 saves and Willie Brown scored twice as the Bobcats extended their winning streak to five straight games with a 5-1 win in Brookings. The Blizzard jumped ahead 1-0 in the 1st period with their lone goal from Griff Jeszka, but it was all Bobcats after that. Aaron Hurdt and Gianni Brandi scored goals in the 2nd period to make it 2-1 and Brown added two in the 3rd period along with a goal from Nick Alexander. Herdt ended up with three points on the night. Blizzard goalie Austin Smith made 28 saves in the loss. Boxscore

Johnstown 1 @ Aston 5 – Michael Merulla completed a big weekend with a hat-trick on Saturday to help the Aston Rebels to a 5-1 win and weekend home sweep of the visiting Tomahawks. Aston led 1-0 after a 1st period goal from Mason Van Tuyl. Johnstown evened the score early in the 2nd period on a goal from Andrew Romano. The Rebels took the lead back for good with a goal later in the period from Dean Balsamo. Merulla then took over the 3rd period with three straight goals. Ryan Cusin picked up three assists and Trevor Micucci made 27 saves in the win. Boxscore

Topeka 6 @ Odessa 2 – Topeka extended their winning streak to nine straight games as they got two goals from Yu Hikosaka and three-point games from Dominic Lutz and Cam Strong in a 6-2 road win and sweep in Odessa. Topeka jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st period with goals from JB Baker, Lutz, Strong and Hikosaka. After Jackalopes forward Hampus Sjodahl opened the 2nd period with a goal to make it 4-1, Topeka responded with another goal from Hikosaka and one from Andre Hart to take a 6-1 lead. Zach Zech had the other goal for the Jacks. Topeka goalie Juho Niku made 21 saves in the win. Boxscore

Kenai River 3 @ New Jersey 4 (OT) – Darren Brady scored just over three minutes into overtime to lift the Titans to a 4-3 win over the visiting Brown Bears to complete a weekend home sweep. New Jersey jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st period with goals from Joseph Schuler and Garrett Hallford. The Brown Bears responded with goals from Charles Spetz and Jack Gessert to tie the game at 2-2. Anthony Cusanelli scored late in the 2nd period for New Jersey to give them back the lead at 3-2. Joey Sardina scored a 3rd period power play goal for Kenai River to send the game to OT. Harrison Feeney made 23 saves in the win, while Nick Nast made 36 saves in the loss. Boxscore

Amarillo 2 @ Corpus Christi 1 – Anton Martinsson was his usual stingy self as he made 31 saves to help the Amarillo Bulls salvage a weekend split in Corpus Christi with a 2-1 win on Saturday in front of over 4,400 fans. The Bulls opened up a 2-0 lead with 1st period goals from George Mika and Michael Forman. Martinsson held the fort until the 3rd period as the IceRays finally broke through with a shorthanded goal from Brad LeLievre. Graham Hunt made 25 saves in the loss. Boxscore

Springfield 3 @ Janesville 2 – The Jr. Blues salvaged a weekend split in Janesville thanks to a 3-2 win over the Jets on Saturday. The Jr. Blues jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the 1st period with goals in the first eight minutes from Brennan Blaszczak and Jeff Skinner. Janesville would cut the lead to 2-1 before the period was done on a goal from Blake Wareham. After a scoreless 2nd period, the eventual game-winner came from Jeff Skinner of the Jr. Blues early in the 3rd period. Adam Winborg had the other goal for the Jets. Tommy Nappier made 27 saves in the win, while Jack LaFontaine made 23 saves in the loss. Boxscore

Fairbanks 4 @ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 5 (OT) – Tanner Banner had a two-point game, which included the overtime-winning goal as the Knights snapped the Ice Dogs winning streak with a 5-4 overtime win. Each team scored three times in a wild 2nd period as Carson Knop scored twice and Tyler Briley added another for the Knights, while the Ice Dogs goals came from Ryner Gorowsky, Todd Burgess and Jakob Stridsberg. In the 3rd period Fairbanks briefly led after Reggie Lutz scored, but the Knights tied the game on a shorthanded goal from Paul Maust with just :20 second remaining, which set up the shorthanded game-winner from Bennett. Grant Valentine made 39 saves in the win. Boxscore
