Saturday Scores: Brown Bears back on track with sweep

Dryden McKay had a big weekend to help Springfield sweep Topeka.

Topeka 2 @ Springfield 3 – Joey Lupo’s power play goal with less than six minutes remaining in the game was the difference as the Jr. Blues swept the RoadRunners thanks to a 3-2 win on Saturday night. Each team scored once in the first two periods as Carlos Fornaris and Sam Rennaker scored for Topeka and Brady Tomlak and Lester Lancaster scored for the Jr. Blues. With 5:57 to go in the 3rd period, Lupo put home the game-winner. Dryden McKay made 44 saves in the win, while Drew Vogler made 30 saves in the loss. Boxscore

Aberdeen 5 @ Bismarck 4 (OT) – Tanner Okeson scored less than a minute into overtime to give the Wings their second win of the weekend as Aberdeen edged Bismarck 5-4. After a scoreless 1st period, Bismarck went up 2-1 in the 2nd period on goals from Matt Perry and Evan Giesler. Aberdeen answered with three straight goals from Drew Doyon, Kyle Haak and Collin Hughes. Giesler added another in the 3rd period for the Bobcats as did Alex Strand. Bjorn Sigurdarson had the other Wings goal in regulation. Boxscore

MN Wilderness 3 @ Minot 2 – The Wilderness completed a weekend road sweep of the Minotauros thanks to a 3-2 win on Saturday. Things looked good for Minot early as Blake Lizotte scored twice in the 1st period to put Minot ahead 2-0. The Wilderness chipped away at the lead with a late 1st period goal from Robb Stautz, another goal in the 2nd period from Darian Romanko and the game-winner in the 3rd period from Aaron Miller. Brock Kautz made 22 saves in the win. Boxscore

Rio Grande Valley 2 @ Lone Star 3 – The Brahmas moved into 2nd place in the South with a weekend sweep of the Killer Bees thanks to a 3-2 win on Saturday night. After a scoreless 1st period, Lone Star took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd period as Ludvig Larsson and Alexey Solovyev scored for the Brahmas. The Killer Bees answered with two goals of their own as Dallas Gerads and Kyle Stephan scored. The game-winner came in the 3rd period as Eric Carreras scored just over four minutes into the 3rd period. Jake Kupsky made 13 saves in the win, while Nick Schmit made 32 saves in the loss. Boxscore

MN Magicians 2 @ Kenai River 3 – Jack Gessert’s power play goal with 1:14 remaining in the game gave the Brown Bears a 3-2 win over the Magicians to complete a weekend home sweep. The game was even at 2-2 after two periods as Tyler Andrews and Maurin Bouvet scored for Kenai River and Brady Heppner and Kane Durment scored for the Magicians. Alec Derks made 23 saves in the win, while Cole Weaver took the loss with 29 saves. Boxscore

Soo 2 @ Keystone 1 – Two, 2nd period goals were enough for the Eagles as they edged the Ice Miners 2-1 on Saturday night. After a scoreless 1st period, Chase Matson scored :44 seconds into the 2nd period and Raymond Brice added another goal eight minutes later. Keystone picked up their lone goal early in the 3rd period from Matt Jones. Sean Keating made 28 saves in the win, while Keystone goalie Alex Blankenburg made 23 saves in the loss. Boxscore

Wenatchee 2 @ Fairbanks 1 (SO) – Zach Quinn made 30 saves and stopped all four shooters in the shootout as the Wild won their second straight game in Fairbanks thanks to a 2-1 shootout win. Both goals in regulation came in the 1st period as Ethan Somoza scored for Fairbanks and David Powlowski scored for the Wild. In the shootout, Wenatchee got goals from Powlowski and Brendan Harris. Patrick Munson made 36 saves in the loss. Boxscore

Michigan 2 @ Coulee Region 1 (SO) – Trevor Gorsuch made 36 saves and stopped all four shooters in the shootout as Michigan salvaged a weekend split with a 2-1 shootout win at Coulee Region. Both goalies played outstanding and kept the game scoreless until the middle of the 3rd period. The Chill took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Garrett Riebling, but the Warriors answered five minutes later on a goal from Tagir Khafizov. Alex Berardinelli and Colin Horton scored in the shootout for Michigan. Adam Carlson made 42 saves in the loss. Boxscore

Austin 3 @ Janesville 4 (SO) – Zach Lavalle scored twice to help the Jets to a 4-3 shootout win at home against Austin, which salvaged a weekend split with the Bruins. The Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Trevor Boyd and JC Maclean. The Jets responded as Lavalle scored back-to-back goals to make it 2-2. Boyd scored again in the 3rd period to make it 3-2, but Alex Smith leveled the game with a power play goal. Brandon Schultz ended up with the shootout winner. Boxscore

Odessa 1 @ Amarillo 2 (OT) – Cody Gylling scored twice including the game-winning goal in overtime as the Amarillo Bulls edged the Odessa Jackalopes 2-1 on Saturday night. It was the Jackalopes who took an early lead as Lane Valimont scored in the 1st period. Less than five minutes later, Gylling answered with a goal to make it 1-1 after one period. The game stayed that way until late into the overtime when Gylling scored the winner while on the power play. Anton Martinsson made 34 saves in the win, while Robin Johansson took the loss, making 35 saves. Boxscore
