Saturday Scores: Nothing but sweeps in the Midwest
MN Wilderness 4 @ Springfield 7 – The Jr. Blues picked up a big weekend home sweep of the Wilderness as they exploded for seven goals in a 7-4 win on Saturday. Seven different players scored for the Jr. Blues, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st period with goals from Trevor Stone, Petr Kuznetsov and Danny Digrande. In a wild 2nd period the Wildernes fought back with all four of their goals from Jack Forbort, Aaron Miller, Ashton Calder and Ryan Bloom. However, the Jr. Blues kept pace and then put the game out of reach with 2nd period goals from Brennan Blaszczak and Matt Long and 3rd period goals from Jeff Skinner and Brady Tomlak. Tommy Nappier made 25 saves in the win. Boxscore
Amarillo 3 @ Lone Star 4 – The Brahmas posted a weekend home sweep of the Bulls thanks to a 4-3 win on Saturday in North Richland Hills. The Brahmas jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Cameron Clarke and Carson Kelley. Amarillo would respond back with three goals from Nicholas Santoro, Nicholas Bohatiuk and Jacob Nitsche to take a 3-2 lead. The Brahmas would respond back in the 3rd period as a goal from Kyle Patava midway through the period evened the score at 3-3 and then Peter Kessel netted the game-winner with loss than seven minutes to go. Corbin Kaczperski made 17 saves in the win, while Anton Martinsson made 34 saves in the loss. Boxscore
Corpus Christi 2 @ Odessa 3 (SO) – The Jacks poured in 51 shots on goal, but it took a shootout for them to complete a weekend home sweep of the IceRays in a 3-2 win on Saturday. Corpus Christi got on the board early in the 1st period with a goal from Drake Lindsay. Odessa responded with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead as Hampus Sjodahl and Zach Zech scored. The IceRays evened things up late in the 3rd period as Brad Power scored with under two minutes remaining. In the shootout, Derek Brown would score the only goal to secure the win and sweep for Odessa. Jacks goalie Gunnar Rivers made 22 saves in the win, while IceRays goalie Graham Hunt made 48 saves in the loss. Boxscore
Janesville 2 @ Fairbanks 1 – The Jets moved to 4-0 against the Ice Dogs this season thanks to a 2-1 win on Saturday, which completed a weekend road sweep. It was the Ice Dogs who struck first as Cayden Cahill scored on the power play midway through the period. However, that would be all the Jets and goalie Jack LaFontaine would allow the rest of the way. The Jets took a 2-1 lead and held on with two goals from Taylor Fernandez that came less than three minutes apart from one another. LaFontaine made 26 saves in the win, while Gavin Nieto made 27 saves in the loss. Boxscore
Coulee Region 6 @ Kenai River 2 – The Chill fired 51 shots on goal and came away with a 6-2 win, which completed a weekend sweep of the Brown Bears, who dropped their 18th straight game. Things looked good early for Kenai River as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a 1st period goal from Jeffrey Fasegha and a 2nd period goal from Joey Sardina. However, it was all Chill after that as they answered back with three goals in the 2nd period from Phil Erickson, Isaac Theisen and Davis Zembergs and three more goals in the 3rd period from Joey Sofo, Will Reedy and Caleb Schroer. Hunter Vorva made 18 saves in the win. Boxscore
Austin 3 @ Bismarck 2 – The Bruins salvaged a weekend split as they came from behind to beat the Bobcats, 3-2 on Saturday. Austin took an early lead with a goal from Jan Stefka, but the Bobcats responded with two straight goals from Jared Pike and Willie Brown to lead 2-1 midway through the opening period. Beofre the period was out, Austin Rueschhoff scored for the Bruins to tie the game at 2-2. After a scoreless 2nd period, the game-winner came early in the 3rd period from Bruins forward Glibert Gabor. Kris Carlson came into the game in relief for the Bruins and stopped all 28 shots that came his way in the win, while David Fessenden took the loss with 21 saves. Boxscore
MN Magicians 4 @ Brookings 5 (OT) – Kane Durment scored with less than a minute remaining in OT as the Blizzard salvaged a weekend home split against the Magicians with a 5-4 win. After an opening goal from Mikael Hakkarainen for the Blizzard, the Magicians took a 2-1 lead with goals from Kevin Dineen and Owen Larson. The Blizzard would regain the lead at 4-2 with three 2nd period goals, including two from Nick Ford and another from Durment. The Magicians got two goals in the 3rd period from Rico Ratajczyk and Johnny Panvica to tie the game at 4-4. With less than a minute remaining in the OT, Durment scored his second goal of the game. Josh Kuehmichel made 27 saves in the win. Boxscore
Aberdeen 2 @ Minot 3 (OT) – The Minot Minotauros came from behind to salvage a weekend home and home split thanks to a 3-2 over time on Saturday. The Wings carried their momentum from Friday’s win into Saturday and jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a 1st period goal from Ryan Cook and a 2nd period tally from Kevin Fitzgerald. The Tauros would respond with two goals later in the 2nd period from Zack Bross and Derek Frentz. All four goals from the teams were scored via the power play. In the overtime, defenseman James LaDouce parked himself on the back door and one-timed a pass through Wings goalie Peter Thome. Lucas Murray made 29 saves in the win, while Thome made 36 saves in the loss. Boxscore
Topeka 5 @ Wichita Falls 2 – Andrew Hart scored twice and Max Haper had four points as the RoadRunners salvaged a weekend split with the Wildcats thanks to 5-2 win on Saturday night in Wichita Falls. Topeka jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Hart and JB Baker. The Wildcats responded back with a goal from Matt Hines, but the RoadRunners would strike twice more on another goal from Hart and a goal from Harper. In the 3rd period, Adam Goodsir scored for the Wildcats and Luka Maver added one more for Topeka. Tyler Johnson made 25 saves in the win. Boxscore
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 3 @ Johnstown 4 (SO) – The Tomahawks salvaged one win of the three game series as they took the shootout from the Knights thanks to a 3rd period comeback. After Johnstown scored first on goal from Kelly O’Brien in the 1st period it looked like the Knights were primed for a sweep as they took a 3-1 lead on goals from Aiden Beck, Paul Maust and Blake Busch. The Tomahawks responded with two goals late in the 3rd period from Adam Pilewic and Luke Lynch to tie the game at 3-3. After the score was tied in the shootout after three shooters, Alex Alger came up with the winner. Jake Gwillim made 32 saves in the win, while Anthony Yamnitsky made 29 saves in the loss. Boxscore
New Jersey 2 @ Aston 3 – The Rebels jumped out to an early lead and scored with just seconds remaining to salvage a weekend split with the Titans in a 3-2 win on Saturday. The Rebels led 2-0 in the first five minutes of the game thanks to goals from Dean Balsamo and Frank Spellman. The Titans would respond back to tie the game at 2-2 with a goal late in the 1st period from Keegan Miller and a 2nd period tally from Andre Durham. In the 3rd period, Chris Deprez would net the game-winner with just :19 seconds remaining. Rebels goalie Trevor Micucci made 26 saves in the win, while Jack Berry made 32 saves in the loss. Boxscore
